Project Overview

X10D - "Efficient, low-cost, stable tandem organic devices" is a collaborative projec with 17 partner funded by the European Community's Seventh Framework Programme (FP7/2007-2013) under grant agreement n° 287818.

X10D aims to enable organic photovoltaics (OPV) to enter the competitive thin-film PV market.

X10D brings together partners that compose a complete and unique OPV research and development consortium, covering each segment of the complete value chain from basic materials and technology developers over to final end-users.



The structure of the project is the following one:

WP1 "High performance materials and their sustainable upscaling"

  • Objective: “To develop and provide the required quantities of enabling materials for the active bulk heterojunction layers in high efficiency tandem solar cells”
  • Specific goals of WP1:
  1. To provide rapid testing capability using advanced characterization techniques, to evaluate the performance of new materials and blend combinations in devices.
  2. To provide up-scaled materials for process development and prototype manufacture.
  3. To determine the feasibility of large scale synthesis of active materials.
  4. To promote and include sustainable chemistry in all synthetic routes.
  5. To develop environmentally friendly “green” materials by facilitating the use of commercially viable, non-halogenated solvents for active layer processing.To design, synthesize and test new light absorbing donor and acceptor materials that can yield tandem solar cells with a performance of 12% power conversion efficiency.

WP2 "High-efficiency device structures with enhanced light incoupling"

  • Objectives: “To develop tandem device structures based on new absorber materials from WP1 and new interlayer concepts, leading to high-performance organic solar cells, as well as to understand their device behavior by in-depth characterization.”
  • Specific goals of WP2:
  1. To design and develop charge conversion interlayers and middle electrodes for 2- and 3- terminal tandem cells.
  2. To develop tandem solar cells with a performance of 12% power conversion efficiency.
  3. To apply light incoupling schemes and optical modeling to reach these goals for both types of devices.
  4. To gain in-depth understanding of the operation of both types of devices.

WP3 "Large area, efficient, low-cost modules"

  • Objectives: “To develop deposition and patterning technologies that allow for creating 2- and 3-terminal tandem OPV modules on alternative transparent conductors and to assess their R2R compatibility”
  • Specific goals of WP3:
  1. Large area alternative stable, high performing and low-cost transparent conductors to ITO.
  2. Deposition techniques for up-scaling uniform films to large area.
  3. Design and construction of modules with optimal area coverage.
  4. In-line cell/module performance testing at 5 m/min.

WP4 "Full device encapsulation and accelerated lifetime evaluation"

  • Objectives: “Identify degradation mechanisms, develop barrier foils, and evaluate the lifetime of OPV modules.”
  • Specific goals of WP4:
  1. Identify intrinsic degradation mechanisms.
  2. Development of barrier foil by wet process.
  3. Characterization and ageing analysis of barrier materials and packaging.
  4. Lifetime measurements of devices and modules.

WP5 "Costs, environmental impact and market analysis"

  • Objectives: “Assessment of OPV to meet future goals of low cost per Watt peak (target <0.7 €/Wp) combined with a low environmental impact and position in the market”
  • Specific goals of WP5:
  1. Cost of Ownership calculation model of a commercial plant with various annual production volumes with the aim to define the conditions to achieve module costs of ~ 0.7 €/Wp.
  2. Environmental profiling of investigated OPV technologies by life-cycle assessment studies (in comparison to relevant benchmarks like thin film Si, CIGS).
  3. Investigation of the market needs and developments for potential applications of OPV like BIPV and grid connected outdoor; specification of requirements for product integration.

WP6 "Dissemination, exploitation, and intellectual property protection"

  • Objectives: “To ensure an efficient dissemination and exploitation of the results of X10D, and an efficient yet effective management of intellectual property.”
  • Specific goals of WP6:
  1. Ensure proper dissemination of results both within the consortium and to the general public.
  2. Ensure proper communication between the consortium and industry to enhance exploitation.
  3. Ensure proper protection and exploitation of intellectual property developed within X10D.

WP7 "Project management and coordination"

  • Objectives: “To ensure an effective management of X10D, respecting the contract, and maintaining timing, objectives, and budget.”
  • Specific goals of WP7:
  1. Coordinate the project and control the finances.
  2. Ensure good communication between partners for feedback of important developments, as well as with the European Commission, project officers, and other EU projects.
  3. Set up regular project meetings.
